Mammatus Clouds

Filed under: Photos on the Web — Admin at 4:20 pm on Wednesday, August 2, 2006

From the ‘just cool’ department – I received an email today, which I actually also received a while back and just deleted it thinking it was fake, but from what I can tell through my research these bad boys are real. They are called Mammatus clouds and form when the air is saturated with rain droplets and/or ice crystals and begins to sink. Supposedly the worst of the storm is already over when these start to form.

Mr. Olsen took these images last year in Nebraska by Hastings College.
