Grand Strategy – Ajax-enabled Risk Clone

Filed under: Front Page,Games,Showcase,Web 2.0 News — Chris Cornutt at 8:13 am on Tuesday, July 11, 2006

Ever feel like you want to play a good, forever-lasting game of Risk but just don't have a board (or are somewhere where you couldn't play it that way if you wanted?) Well, Bryan Brunton wrote in to tell us about a game inspired by this classic war game that's fully Ajax enabled - Grand Strategy.

Grand Strategy is a game inspired by the board game Risk. It was implemented using the DWR and DOJO libraries. Java Server Faces is used for session management and localization, but other than that, Grand Strategy is a pure Ajax application.

Simply, head over and register an account to get started. A registration email will be sent and, once you confirm your account, you can get right into the game. There are (usually) several different games to join and different game types to choose from as well as messaging abilities and configurable game creation. The system even allows you to keep track of completed games to map out your progress.

JFK Assassination Timeline

Filed under: Front Page,Showcase,UI,Web 2.0 News — Dion Almaer at 8:03 am on Friday, July 7, 2006

The JFK Assassination Timeline is a nice example of a dragable clickable pure JS UI.

The demo shows off SIMILE:

SIMILE is a joint project conducted by the W3C, MIT Libraries, and MIT CSAIL. SIMILE seeks to enhance inter-operability among digital assets, schemata/vocabularies/ontologies, metadata, and services. A key challenge is that the collections which must inter-operate are often distributed across individual, community, and institutional stores. We seek to be able to provide end-user services by drawing upon the assets, schemata/vocabularies/ontologies, and metadata held in such stores.

eefoof.com: ajax driven user content

Filed under: Front Page,Showcase,Web 2.0 News — Dion Almaer at 10:10 am on Monday, July 3, 2006

eefoof is a new project that offers a user-submitted content site similar to YouTube, Google Video, AlbinoBlackSheep, etc, except we share ad revenue with content submitters. Users earn a portion of the site's ad revenue based on how much traffic their submission(s) receives.

Ajax comes into play heavily for the media galleries on the site. The Ajax interface is designed to minimize page reloads and provide a pleasant experience to the user.

Ajax is also used extensively during content submission. When a user is uploading a file they are shown a progress indicator with bytes received / speed. One of the neat features is that when uploading an image, the user sees the image being drawn in the webpage as the server is receiving the data, live.

Eventsites – Proof Of Concept

Filed under: Ajax,Examples,Google,Mashups,Showcase,Web 2.0 News — Admin at 4:37 am on Monday, July 3, 2006

Developer Pete Nixey created this site as a proof-of-concept.  Eventsites is a full-fledged application that uses no server logic and stores no data of it’s own.  We’ve all seen the Google map mashups, but this really takes things to the next level and shows the power of what can be created in today’s Web 2.0 environment.

This is a 1 page AJAX application that merely acts as a “client to other webservices”.

Visit Pete’s blog to find out how this was created.

MODx : CMS

Filed under: Ajax,Examples,Framework,Presentation,Server,Showcase,Web 2.0 News — Admin at 3:12 am on Monday, July 3, 2006

MODx is a content management system with AJAX goodness (or Web 2.0 as they say). The code is neat and gives a true CMS feel. Though I liked the admin Interface more, the panel offers a wide range of options , Tools, extra plugins , stats checking etc. like a true CMS .

I should say it does a lot more than other AJAX based scripts like AJAXpress and AJAX Portal . But still it needs a lot more to get into high level category of scripts like Joomla and WordPress.
